Important Updates from Mrs. Nauman

Grades
My grades are current in schoolmax. The only grade is the Social Skills grade for last week, which will be inputted after viewing scholars' agenda books tomorrow. If you should have any questions or concerns, please email me.

Scholastic Book Orders
Scholars who ordered books in December were given their books this past Friday. Thank you to all of those who ordered. We received 4 new books for our classroom library, each scholar in my class received a free book "I Survived True Stories: Extreme Weather" and a FREE $5.00 BOOK coupon when you spend $10.00 or more valid until February 29th. ** This was the promotion for December, so thank you, thank you, thank you. All my scholars benefited for those who placed orders. Remember you can send in the payment with your child or you may order online. My class code is JKKPC.
Please look in your child's Monday folder tomorrow for the $5.00 coupon. I wrote each child's name on it.
There will be new order forms in your child's Monday folder the first week in February.

STEM Fair
All STEM Fair books will be returned to scholars by Tuesday, January 19th. Please look at the comments written in your child's book. I am still waiting for revisions for the Hypothesis, Variables, and Materials from some scholars.

Hypothesis needs to have a reason on why they think this from their own experience.

Variables- independent variable is 1 thing that is changed in your experiment. **It is important to only have one thing changed.
Dependent variable- is what you hope to happen (outcome).
Controlled Variables- is everything you are keeping the same in your experiment.

Materials- all units have to be in METRIC. No inches, ounces, pounds, etc. This is the US Customary System.

Procedures- Step by step instructions on how to do the investigation. It is like a recipe. Please be specific so that anyone can take your book and complete the investigation without asking questions. The last part is to please make sure the components in the procedures match what is on the materials list.
For example: In the procedures, one scholar wrote "Cut string to 35 cm length and tie to parachute."
But in his/her materials list, scissors were not listed.

Data Collection Tool- chart/space to record the results of investigation. It should be blank as of now.
The chart should have a
Title
Labels x axis (horizontal)
Labels y axis (vertical)
Space for Mean (average) of your data
Space for 3 trials

These are some of the common 'mistakes' I have seen while responding to STEM Fair books. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email, call or I am available to assist before and after school. The STEM Fair coordinator is Ms. Cook (3rd grade) and she will be happy to assist as well if you have additional questions that I cannot answer.

Projected STEM Fair Night is March 17th!

Your child should be starting their experiment/investigation soon. The next component that is due is the results (data collection tool completed), results graph, and results written explanation on February 8th.

The following is the timeline again for STEM Fair dates. They should be in the front of your child's STEM Fair book.
