Substitute
Scholars will have a substitute on February 2nd and February 4th half day (morning only) as I have professional development training.
Long term substitute
Ms. Hayes will continue to shadow my class and transition to teaching when I go on maternity leave in March. Should you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me or call the school 301-350-6002.
Class field trips
We are still in the process of rescheduling the Health field trip. Date TBA.
We recently were approved for the end of the year 4th grade class trip to Terrapin Adventures. Scholars went last year and had a BLAST!! It is a trip about team building, communication and overcoming obstacles/fears. Scholars will be participating in zip lining, the giant swing and team building activities. The following is the website. It provides video clips, answers to questions, and other useful information.

Click on the Team building link
Then school and youth field trips
We are doing the Basic Package
The tentative date is Thursday, May 19th, 2016. We are informing parents now, as it is a costly field trip. The cost last year was $50 to include the activities ($35 goes to Terrapin) and the cost of the bus. More information will be forthcoming once the permission slip and all paperwork is finalized.
Parent Volunteers
I am in need of a parent volunteer to make copies, change bulletin boards, and complete filing for student portfolios. If you would like to volunteer, please let me know what day and time works for you. Thank you. :0)
Enjoy your weekend. Thank you for all your continued support this year.

Update from Mrs. Nauman
Good evening parents,
I wanted to make you aware scholars will have a substitute tomorrow only for the morning. I am attending a professional development training in the morning and returning in the afternoon. Scholars will also have a substitute all day Monday due to jury duty.
Scholars were introduced to Ms. Cyntera Hayes this week. She will be my long term substitute while I am on maternity leave. She has been shadowing our class to know the scholars, learn the rituals, routines, and the curriculum. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me. As always, thank you for your continued support in your child's education.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nauman, NBCT

Important Updates from Mrs. Nauman
Grades
My grades are current in schoolmax. The only grade is the Social Skills grade for last week, which will be inputted after viewing scholars' agenda books tomorrow. If you should have any questions or concerns, please email me.
Scholastic Book Orders
Scholars who ordered books in December were given their books this past Friday. Thank you to all of those who ordered. We received 4 new books for our classroom library, each scholar in my class received a free book "I Survived True Stories: Extreme Weather" and a FREE $5.00 BOOK coupon when you spend $10.00 or more valid until February 29th. ** This was the promotion for December, so thank you, thank you, thank you. All my scholars benefited for those who placed orders. Remember you can send in the payment with your child or you may order online. My class code is JKKPC.
Please look in your child's Monday folder tomorrow for the $5.00 coupon. I wrote each child's name on it.
There will be new order forms in your child's Monday folder the first week in February.
STEM Fair
All STEM Fair books will be returned to scholars by Tuesday, January 19th. Please look at the comments written in your child's book. I am still waiting for revisions for the Hypothesis, Variables, and Materials from some scholars.
Hypothesis needs to have a reason on why they think this from their own experience.
Variables- independent variable is 1 thing that is changed in your experiment. **It is important to only have one thing changed.
Dependent variable- is what you hope to happen (outcome).
Controlled Variables- is everything you are keeping the same in your experiment.
Materials- all units have to be in METRIC. No inches, ounces, pounds, etc. This is the US Customary System.
Procedures- Step by step instructions on how to do the investigation. It is like a recipe. Please be specific so that anyone can take your book and complete the investigation without asking questions. The last part is to please make sure the components in the procedures match what is on the materials list.
For example: In the procedures, one scholar wrote "Cut string to 35 cm length and tie to parachute."
But in his/her materials list, scissors were not listed.
Data Collection Tool- chart/space to record the results of investigation. It should be blank as of now.
The chart should have a
Title
Labels x axis (horizontal)
Labels y axis (vertical)
Space for Mean (average) of your data
Space for 3 trials
These are some of the common 'mistakes' I have seen while responding to STEM Fair books. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email, call or I am available to assist before and after school. The STEM Fair coordinator is Ms. Cook (3rd grade) and she will be happy to assist as well if you have additional questions that I cannot answer.
Projected STEM Fair Night is March 17th!
Your child should be starting their experiment/investigation soon. The next component that is due is the results (data collection tool completed), results graph, and results written explanation on February 8th.
The following is the timeline again for STEM Fair dates. They should be in the front of your child's STEM Fair book.

STEM Updates/ Field trip information
STEM Fair
STEM Fair Materials due 1/13/16
Revised Variables is due tomorrow 1/12/16 -if your child's variables were not approved. Most scholars could not tell me the independent variable (1 thing they are changing), dependent variable (hope to happen because of the change), and the controlled variables (things they are keeping the same). Please read page 12 in your child's STEM Fair book. They can also refer to the in class model STEM project board they completed in class and their class notes.
**Please have parent signatures BEFORE turning in each component. This ensures parents know what is being turned in.

Field Trip
The field trip scheduled for this Friday, January 15, 2016 will postpone due to a family emergency with the vendor. The new field trip date will be announced when the vendor reschedules. It will also need to coordinate with the availability of the Liberty Housing Office room rental. Thank you for your cooperation with this matter as it was unforeseen.
Sincerely,
Third and Fourth Grade Team

Parent Signatures for STEM Fair Projects
Please sign and date your child's STEM Fair book prior to turning in each component. This ensures parent involvement and knowing what your child is turning in. Questions were due today. There were several scholars who did not turn in a book or write the question in the book. This results in a zero. The timeline of deadlines was given on Monday. It is also in the front of your child's STEM book and on the class blog. The STEM Hypothesis is due tomorrow. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me or Ms. Cook, STEM coordinator. Thank you. :0)
